Charging a Hybrid Car Battery: Hybrid vs. Plug-in Hybrid vs. Electric

There are three major alternatives to gas-powered cars on the market today: the standard hybrid, plug-in hybrid electric vehicle (PHEV), and electric vehicle (EV). Here are the main differences between models:

  • Standard Hybrids: Hybrids are the models that started it all. A standard hybrid is powered by an electric motor and internal combustion engine that work in tandem to power your car. Because the battery charges itself automatically, you simply fill up the engine as usual at your regular gas station.
  • Plug-In Hybrid Electric Vehicles: Like the standard hybrid, the PHEV uses both an electric motor and an internal combustion engine. However, it has a larger battery that has the ability to power the vehicle on electricity alone. Charging the hybrid car battery can take place at a public charging station, a 120-volt household outlet, or a fast-charging home station.
  • Electric Vehicle: While not technically hybrids, EVs are powered by electricity alone. Like the PHEV, you’ll need to charge the battery at a public charging station or home charging station. But, the EV has a much longer electric range than the PHEV – and also a much longer charging time.

How to Charge a Plug-In Hybrid Car Battery: Three Methods

Figuring out how to charge a hybrid car battery may seem intimidating at first, but many drivers find it more convenient. After all, you can fuel up your vehicle inside your very own garage! Here are three methods of charging a hybrid car battery:

  • Portable charging: Models like the NX+ PHEV come with a standard-equipped portable charging cord. Just plug into a grounded 120-volt outlet to charge your battery. But keep in mind that this is the slowest charging method by far.
  • Home fast charging: If you get a 240-volt fast charging station professionally installed in your garage, you can recharge at a much faster rate without leaving home.
  • Public charging: While out and about in Torrance, you can find public charging stations to top off your battery. These are most commonly found at popular places likes apartment buildings, malls, and other public attractions. Check out websites and apps to find charging stations near you in an instant.
